HE allusion to Topham reminds me to say that I had heard from another source that he was taking a vacation. He had joined a biological commission to seek the beginnings of the human race in Mesopotamia. The preadamite skulls and bones in Europe seeming to postulate a source farther east. Topham would not be in London this season, evidently.

My thoughts dwelt on Judith. Was she, after all, all that she seemed? I had, to be sure, had an enviable opportunity of determining the point. But had I allowed for the intoxicating influence of tone and manner—of the spiritual shining through the physical and transfiguring it? Had I been affected by her own belief in herself? Had Sara been obliterated as completely as seemed to be the case? I might be more suggestible (as the jargon is) than I supposed.

“Soul is form,” as Spenser says, “and doth the body make.” And that might imply that the new spirit in Sara’s body might effect a corresponding change in its material habitation. Then, Judith’s own account of her predicament was plausible enough. But I was not wholly convinced. She was adorable, at any rate.

“Glamour!” I was not unfamiliar with the principle of the thing, and the radius of its power might be greater than I had imagined. Was there an illusive something playing over Judith’s face and form, behind which, could I penetrate it, the mournful lineaments of my old schoolmate was lurking? Was Sara “possessed” (in the Biblical sense) by some spectral thing able to lead mortals astray? A demon of mischief masquerading in the corpse of a suicide? I knew not what to think:
